Samuel Tilton first settled this
town in 1673. At that time, the area belonged to New York and
was known as the Mannor of Tisbury. At least by 1694, and
possibly earlier, the name changed to Chilmark. Located on the
west end of the island of Martha's Vineyard (Dukes County), the
town incorporated in 1714. This collection of Chilmark's town
records includes 19 volumes.

Except for occasional faded ink,
most of this book is legible. Town records include meeting
minutes, ear marks, oaths of office, militia lists and a 1792
citizen's claim against the state. Vital records span from 1688
to 1817 and later. The 1673 arrival of the first settler, Samuel
Tilton, is mentioned on page 141. Note on page 202 the practice
of "School Choice" generations ago.
