Cohasset, first incorporated as a district from part of Hingham on 26 April 1770, became a town in 1775 under the General Act that changed of all districts to towns. Bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the northeast, the town's neighboring communities include Hingham, Scituate, Norwell and Hull.

There are eleven volumes of vital and town records. For the early period to 1850, there are two volumes of vital records (fiches 1-4) and two volumes of town records (fiches 5-18). Vital data prior to 1770 is transcribed from Hingham records. Also, death information before 1844 is scant and marriage records from 1835-1844 are missing. For the later period, 1844-1900, there are five vital record books (fiches 19-24, 31-36) and three associated indexes (fiches 25-30).
