Dartmouth, a coastal town in Bristol County, is bordered on the south by the sea and on the north by Fall River and Freetown. It was a very large area when incorporated in 1644. Present day neighbors on the east and west, New Bedford and Westport, were once part of Dartmouth. In fact, transcripts of some of the early Dartmouth town records still are kept in the New Bedford City Hall. Fairhaven and Acushnet are also within the original boundaries. As the entire region suffered widespread death and destruction at the onset of King Philip's War, record keeping around 1675 may have been difficult.

Besides the vital records, which sometimes list the actual hour of birth, this collection includes many other items of historical interest. For instance, names of those denied residence in the town are given, as well as names of some who were charged with assault or intoxication. Tax records, some located obscurely in a marriage book, provide a type of credit report for one period of time. Forbidden bans, in the first book below, are written objections to intended marriages and are well worth reading. Also, of interest is the town's decision, at one point, to "dispense with the high School."

Dartmouth Records 1667-1844: Births, Intentions of Marriage, Forbidden Bans, Marriages, Deaths. The dates of 1667-1844 in the title reflect those of the marriage records. Births and deaths from about 1650-1864, however, also appear in this volume. Except for the forbidden bans, the events in this transcript are arranged alphabetically by surname.

Dates on the edge of some pages are worn away in this old volume.

Transcripts, however, of Dartmouth records in the New Bedford City Hall have the following dates: births 1686-1787, marriages 1667-1787, deaths 1687-1781 and intentions 1726-1787.

Dartmouth Births & Deaths 1750-1844.

Essentially, this is a volume of birth records, mostly before 1800. There are a few associated deaths. Sometimes, the hour, as well as the date, of an event is recorded. A few pages of miscellaneous town records are found at the end of the book.

Dartmouth General Records 1647-1779; Births 1680-1704, Marriages 1678-1703, Intentions 1727. The date of 1647 in the title may be a transposition, as data before 1674 is unlikely. The scant vital records in this volume are concentrated in the first pages. Most of the town records are minutes of town meetings. Both a transcript and an index to the Dartmouth town meetings of 1674-1787 are located in the New Bedford City Hall.

Dartmouth Town Meeting Records 1777-1790.

Some of this old writing is hard to read, especially where the ink is faded. Most of the entries are minutes of town meetings. Other records, however, are found and include a noteworthy "Act To prevent Monopoly and oppression," which appears at the front of the book. Perhaps some of this book is included in the transcript and index of Dartmouth town meetings 1674-1787 found in the New Bedford City Hall.

Dartmouth Town Records 1790-1844.

There are about 500 pages in this volume. For a typed copy, see the book below. Most of the records are minutes of town meetings. For some reason, there are two sets of records for essentially the same time period. The first set appears to continue from the volume above. The second set starts in 1782, which is eight years earlier than the first set and the title of this volume. Another curious feature is that only a midsection of 272 pages is numbered. Hopefully, there is no connection between these puzzles and the vote in 1829 (page 137) "to dispense with the high School."

The first pages of this book are constables' records from 1789-1793 and relate to persons denied residence in the town. The remaining pages are town records from 1810-1845; most are signed by the town clerk. Note that five pages from the typescript above are located on the last fiche for this volume. Also, the 1836 property taxes come from Marriages 1892-1935, Vol III.

These records are mainly minutes of church meetings from 1831 to 1868. As such, they include baptisms, membership transfers, committee assignments, disfellowships and exclusions. Membership lists are annotated with death dates as late as 1878. Death age and/or birth year are also included for some deceased children.

This is titled as an index to Volume I (1843-1864), Volume II (1865-1891) and Volume III (1892-1922). There appears to be a discrepancy, however, between the page numbers in the index and the page numbers in Volume III. Also, some names, unfortunately, are lost in the tight binding.

Dartmouth Births 1865-1891+. Vol II:1-42; Vol III:1-59+

This volume appears to be two books in one. The first 42 pages are births from 1865-1891, and are referenced as Volume II in the index volume above. They are followed by a few birth depositions, from 1860-1897, which may not be indexed. Next come about 59 pages of births from 1892-1948 (perhaps Volume III), though only those through 1900 are found on this fiche. The volume concludes with an index from 1873-1923 of some, but not necessarily all, entries in the record.
