Dedham was organized as a town in September 1636, with first settlers apparently arriving about one year earlier. Present neighbors include Boston, Milton, Canton, Westwood, Dover and Needham; but earlier neighbors also included Roxbury, Dorchester, Concord, Watertown, and Natick. Other locales having a historical relationship to Dedham are Cambridge, Bellingham, Walpole, Hyde Park, Norwood, and Stoughton. Accordingly, look in other towns for additional records of early Dedham residents.

Dedham Records [1636-1659]
. Vol 1. 243 pages.
This 1875 copy of the "first volume of the Ancient Records" of the Town of Dedham is a transcript of Vol 1 below on fiches 6-9. For an index to many land grantees identified in this book, see fiches 10-13. Note that town laws include a rule that each house must have a sturdy ladder that reaches the top of the chimney (p 97); still Henry Smyth’s house burned in 1641/2 (p 130/77). Of special interest, also, are fines mandated in 1636 for cutting trees without a permit or for covering a house with clapboard (p 25/16), and in 1637 for missing or being late to meetings (p 35/21). The significance of lightly penciled, secondary page numbers (shown after the slash) is not yet determined, except that they are not directly related to page numbers in the original book; e.g., data on page 30/19 in this transcript is found on page 11/25 of the original record.

For a transcript of this "Day Book from 1636-1658", see the volume above. Note that one page of 1707 data, stashed in this book about 1850, has been placed with others of that date in this filmed publication. Note, also, that most pages have two different numbering systems; e.g., page 25/40 (with its contents found in the transcript above on page 57/33). Old style handwriting, and faded or bleeding ink make some reading difficult, especially the first part of the book.

Index Dedham Records: Land Grants [1638-1806].
This book indexes land grants recorded in volumes 1, 2, 3, and 4, but most page numbers may refer to the transcripts rather than the original records. Though mainly a grantor (name in first column) index, many grantees (name in second column) are listed alphabetically under the grantor heading for Dedham Proprietors. Some light ink.

Dedham Records Extracts from 1636 to 1836. About 320 pages.
1839 extract. Divided into two parts, the first part considers historical aspects of the town; e.g., the covenant made by first settlers, the petition to incorporate the town, land grants for various purposes, and other items from minutes of town meetings. The second part of the book addresses physical features of the town; e.g., mostly [high]ways, but also locating gravel pits, stone quarries, etc. Numbers in parenthesis reference original folios and pages; numbers in brackets are estimated.
