When undertaking a search
for the oldest records of Dunstable, look beyond
Massachusetts to Nashua, New Hampshire. That is because
Nashua was first known as Dunstable--and Dunstable,
Massachusetts, was once part of New Hampshire. This
fiche collection, however, includes only records now
housed in the Dunstable Town Hall in
Massachusetts--twenty books: thirteen providing vital
data from about 1679-1900; i.e., birth, baptism,
marriage and/or death; and fourteen supplying other
documents that identify town residents of 1743-1915;
e.g., militia lists, tax assessments, pauper records,
personal mortgages, church admissions and dismissals,
and voter registrations.

This volume contains
extracts from at least three old books. The first, on
pages 1-38, provides vital records of 1679-1753. Records
from the second, an original volume purchased 4 June
1746, extend from page 39-200, with the following copied
from its title page, "Dunstable in the Province of
New Hampshire." It shows original page numbers of
1-20 for marriages of 1741-1839, 21-60 and 64-ca 84 for
births of 1730-1847, and 61-64 for deaths of 1793-1821.
A few items from a third volume, located at the office
of the City Clerk in Nashua, New Hampshire, appear on
pages 200-202.

This 1876 copy of
"Ancient Records" includes town meeting
minutes, oaths, perambulations, church members, town
accounts of 1743-1790, and a 1744 tax list (pages
4-5)--along with marriages of 1757-1773. (Note that
Dunstable identifies, variously, with New Hampshire,
Middlesex, and the Province of Massachusetts Bay.)
Additional vital records of 1724-1801 seem to come from
another source, as the original book includes no births
nor deaths. Perhaps the unknown source also provides the
interesting commentaries about lost and found items on
pages 533-534.

book". Look a few frames beyond the births on page
57 (fiche 35) for the drowning deaths of Thomas Ralston
and his son as they passed through town 18 June 1828
with their family--en route from Province of New
Brunswick to Kingston Upper Canada [Ontario]. Note,
also, that some who left the Congregational Church from
1811-1814, returned to it in 1815.

Records at the beginning
of the book include the Confession of Faith and
Covenant; as well as such business as rules, discipline
for un-Christian acts, baptisms, admissions, and
dismissals. News items, such as the 1871 death of a past
minister, sometimes appear. The end of the book provides
lists of members at time of baptism, marriage and/or
death; along with a chronological listing of church
admissions and dismissals--perhaps extracted from
earlier pages in the book. Two censuses identify church
members of 1860-1873 and circa 1879-1897, with dates of
church admission ranging from 1813-1897. Dates of death
(ranging from 1861-1898), sometimes with age or place of
death, and new places of residence, also, often appear
in the censuses. Note that 1885 membership consisted of
20 males and 44 females.
