East Bridgewater, first part of Bridgewater, became a town in 1823. This microfiche collection of eighteen volumes of the town's records includes the following: (1) indexes (three books) to the vital records after 1843 (seven registers); (2) an index and two books of marriage intentions 1850-1908; (3) two early town books, with vital records before 1844; and (4) three early books of miscellaneous town records.

Bridgewater Records 1656-1739.

In the town hall at East Bridgewater, this volume appears to be a copy, or partial copy, of the first and second books of Bridgewater records, dated respectively, 1656-1739 and 1702-1738. Pages 1-85 are copied from the Bridgewater Town Records 1809-1819, Vol 5, and pages 87-100 are copied from the first 22 pages of Bridgewater Town Records 1822-1823, Vol 6. Neither volume appears in our Bridgewater collection from 1641-1900, suggesting that they were missing from the Bridgewater Town Hall at the time of filming. Likewise absent from our Bridgewater collection are volumes referenced in this compilation as "First Book of Marriages from Town Records 1759-1823" and "First Book of Births and Deaths [and some Marriages] in the Town Records of Bridgewater 1801-1823"--from which data on pages 149-164 below is copied.

Though referenced as the "First Book of Mortgages," pages 105-146 seem to be copied from miscellaneous Town Records 1770-1863, Vol. 1 (see Bridgewater 1641 -1900, fiches 103-109). Besides personal mortgages, this book contains "warnings out," highway records, perambulations, pew sales, fence divisions, and reports of stray animals.

Note that pages 181-216 index the following: names (181-189), persons warned out (200-203), paupers (204), births (204-211), marriages (212-215), and deaths (216). Blank pages include 10-14, 86, 102-104, 171-179, and others.
