Located at the east end of the
island of Martha's Vineyard in Dukes County, Edgartown became
a part of Massachusetts in 1691. Though settled before 1642,
it was a New York town by 1671--perhaps earlier. This
collection includes sixteen volumes of town and vital records.

Look for births, marriages, and
deaths scattered between pages 61 and 310 of this book. Among
the other town records, discover proprietors lists and meeting
minutes, land grants and divisions, pew deeds, illustrated ear
marks, the town policy regarding crows and blackbirds, courses
taught to school children, estate inventories and at least one
last will and testament.

In this book of intermixed town
and vital records, births (and related deaths) circa 1718-1840
are arranged by family--and occasionally include the marriage
date of the parents. Except for deaths registered from
1832-1839, separate death records are scant and the few for
1822-1824 are sprinkled through the book (e.g., pp 80, 89,
244). Most marriages (from about 1782) and marriage intentions
(from about 1800) are arranged chronologically and extend to
1838. Membership certificates for Methodists, Baptists and,
perhaps, other churches are scattered throughout the book
(e.g., pp 174-175, 251-252, 318-359ff). Town records note that
1007 families moved out of town between 1787 and 1822. Did
other Massachusetts towns experience a similar exodus?

dog licenses, ear marks, fence viewers, indentures, liens,
mortgages of personal property (and foreclosures), oyster
permits, pew deeds, perambulations, selectmen's records, stray
animals and other town business. Of special interest are a
surgeon's certificate of discharge from Civil War for
disability (p 380); the 1859 sale of a "black man"
for $100 (p 289); 1861 prices of food and clothing (pp
326-344); 1862-1868 intentions of Indians and "people of
color" who desire state citizenship (p 353). Note
occasional blank pages and/or light ink; e.g., 31-38, 306-349
and 425-438.
