Granby, established in 1768 from South Hadley and known there as the Second Parish, is surrounded today by Belchertown, Ludlow, Chicopee, South Hadley, and Amherst. These vital records include nine volumes and two major collections of tax lists.

Identified as an index to the volume above, this book references few pages before 358 or after 478, but concludes with some actual birth and death records of 1841 and 1842. Though the index concentrates on births and deaths, it omits many families. For instance, no reference is made to the Giddings surname in the index though pages with entries regarding family members include 18,38,39,43,249,261,351,357,361,387,401,411, & 547.

Granby Tax Lists 1782-1824.

Old writing, faded ink and worn pages make for difficult reading. In fact, even the dates of four of the tax lists are questionable; i.e., the first, third, eighth and fourteenth in this series. The date of the first list is probably 1784, but may be 1782. The third list is probably 1793, but may be 1783. The eighth list is probably 1806, but may be a duplicate of 1805. The fourteenth list, though sandwiched between those of 1811 and 1812, seems to predate 1807; perhaps it is 1803 or earlier. Note that the first tax was for the purpose of repairing highways and supporting bridges and the second tax was to preserve preaching.
