established as a town in 1739, it was a plantation known as "Lambstown".

Hardwick Town Records
1735-1750: Vital Records 1730-1747.
Vol 1. Abt 200 pages. This unique book is part transcript and
part original record. Roman numerals from i to cxliii (1-143)
page the transcript. Many pages of the original records are hard
to read, and page numbers do not seem to exist. Among the town
records of about 1736-1766 are minutes of meetings, road
descriptions, and reports of stray animals. Births range from
about 1715-1762, marriages from 1746-1770, and marriage
publishments from 1743-1747 and 1769-1771–including some from
the New Braintree District. Note the 10 March 1743/4 intention
of Abraham Gibbs of Quabbin to marry Kezia Atwood of Hardwick
(2nd frame of fiche 4, and 6th frame of fiche 3), and
her 24 November 1744 refusal (7th frame of fiches 4
and 3). |

Town records 1745-1789 include
minutes of town meetings, town accounts, pew sales,
perambulations, reports of new residents, and reports of stray
animals. Page 225 tells that it took a legislative act in 1803
for Timothy & Mary Paige to name their son Lucius Robinson
Paige. Other items of special interest are the fact that a new
resident in 1777 came from British troops (p 597); and the 1787
petition for freedom for Capt Chattuck & other imprisoned in
Boston (p 523). Family records consist mostly of births, with a
few related deaths, and perhaps a marriage or two--with dates
ranging from about 1734-1823. On some pages, original pages are
crossed out and replaced. Numbers in parenthesis below indicate
replacement numbers. For an index to the births below, see fiche
1, above, which references the original numbers. |

1790-1833, minutes of town meetings 1789-1832, and miscellaneous
records of about 1770-1844. The miscellaneous records include
such items as perambulations 1799-1830, pew sales 1770-1831,
warnings out 1791-1793, tax exempt church members 1828-1833, tax
abatements 1829-1832, road descriptions, fence disputes, reports
of stray animals, and ear marks. Note, on page 166, a reference
to dogs disturbing public worship in the meeting house on the
Sabbath, and, on page 49, an 1821 character reference for Moses
Paige. Light ink makes some reading impossible. |
