Formerly known as Plantation Number Seven, Hawley became a town on February 6, 1792. While located in Franklin County, it is bounded by Hampshire and Berkshire counties. In fact, one Hampshire neighbor, Plainfield, annexed part of Hawley in 1803. Other neighboring towns include Charlemont, Buckland, Ashfield and Savoy.

The town's earliest records comprise four books, with information as early as 1727. Only the oldest book is indexed. It records births and deaths by family; accordingly, it lists several events that occurred before the town was settled. Births from 1729 to 1826 are also found toward the end of another early volume, the first Town Records book. The first book of marriage records, however, was not begun until 1795.

From 1844 until 1858, the vital records are combined in one volume. Beginning 1859, the births, marriages and deaths are kept in separate books. All of these later volumes are indexed. Additionally, there is a book about Hawley residents who served in the Civil War. It lists the names of soldiers and their parents, together with dates of enlistment, discharge, and, sometimes, death.
