Though descriptive in 1634 of its seaside location, the early name of Barecove was changed to Hingham in 1635. With ocean on the north, neighboring towns now include Weymouth on the west, Cohasset on the east and Norwell and Rockland on the south.

Fifty-two old volumes of Hingham records were filmed. They include a collection of nine huge volumes with data from 1635-1880. Arranged alphabetically by birth, marriage and death, they also reference residents not found in the vital records who are listed in other types of town records.

There are also records that list town residents at various periods. Early land records establish the identity of first settlers and, sometimes, their relationship to each other. A property valuation in 1749 lists all households. Records of fence divisions and mortgages also identify early residents.

As in most other Massachusetts towns, out-of-town (O-T) marriages before 1800 are included in this collection. Not as common in other towns, however, are the out-of-town death records available in Hingham for the years 1844-1890. Also unique, are occasional references to Negroes or Blacks in the Hingham vital records.

The reader should be aware that, regardless of the title, a book may contain inserts of data different from the main body of information. This is true in Hingham, as well as in most of the other vital record collections of Massachusetts.
