Hubbardston, established first as a district from part of Rutland in 1767, acquired town status under a general act of 1775 that made towns of all districts.

Hubbardston General Records 1767-1795. About 70 pages/fiche.

Probably known as the "first book," this volume records town meetings of 1767-1795, marriages of about 1770-1793, and marriage intentions of about 1786-1790. Also included are births and deaths, many arranged by family, from about 1747-1803. "Warnings out" are listed for 1790--and perhaps other years.

Besides transcribing the vital records of Book 2, this volume (perhaps #1A) extracts births, deaths, marriages and intentions from the earliest town book; and provides the only copy of marriage records for 1802-1843. While most of the births and deaths from 1749-1853 are indexed, the marriages are indexed only from 1798 to about 1835--and pages referencing them are scattered among the working papers of the birth and death indexes on loose pages after 263.

Of special interest are an 1837 town census (pp 245-246) and an 1828 list of ministers from 14 surrounding towns (p 135). The surname of an active town official, John Church, emphasizes the relationship between town and church in early New England; e.g., pages 88 and 183-184.
