Hull is a small peninsula
in Plymouth County extending northward from the
neighboring towns of Hingham and Cohasset. Until May 29,
1644, it was known as Natascot. Today the shore there is
still known as Nantasket Beach.

Six volumes of town and
vital records currently exist. One or more books of
early records was damaged or destroyed by fire, but some
part of the data, perhaps all, was preserved by copying
into the earliest town record book below.

Hull Town Records
1657-1841. 227 pages.
|
|
"Long Book - Hull, Mass
Town Records Rebound & Copied 1850--with short book in
one Volume together." Included are vital records, land
grants, boat and timber records, town meeting minutes,
church records, treasurer's records, town ordinances,
certificate of freedom to a former slave (1780, page 5)
and an outline of the program observing 200 years since
the first landing of immigrants in Dorchester (page
136). This book is apparently a transcript of a
fire-scarred original record. Page numbers are from the
original volume and are usually written upside-down in
the middle of the page. Dates and contents listed below
are representative and may not be all-inclusive.

Hull 1675-1781. 279 pages.

|
"Short Book of Hull Mass
Town Records Rebound with Long book together in one
volume 1850." Most of the book appears to be selectmen's
records and town meeting minutes. Some of the earliest
writing is a challenge to interpret, especially on faded
pages. Pages 94-103 are filmed twice for ease in reading
the upside-down writing.

Hull Vital Records
1841-1849.
|
|
A curious note on page
101 cites that the "Vital Records of Hull from 1843 to
1890 reported destroyed by fire. The following record of
births marriages and deaths is copied from returns on
file at the State House." The strange part is that these
same Hull records, thought burned, do exist. See the
Hull 1630-1900 collection, fiches 10-15.
