Leominster (pronounced
"lemon-stir"), Worcester County, Massachusetts, is
the birthplace of John Chapman, better known as Johnny
Appleseed. For his birth record, see fiche #62. Originally
part of Lancaster, the town was organized in 1740. Surrounding
towns presently include Lancaster, Sterling, Princeton,
Westminster, Fitchburg and Lunenberg.

These original town records
include about 300 pages of town meetings, selectmen's records,
oaths of office, notices of new residents and stray animals,
and a copy of the Declaration of Independence. Intentions of
marriage, circa 1753-1779, are scattered throughout.
Marriages, circa 1744-1777, are also located in various parts
of the volume. Most births, and associated deaths, are
concentrated together. Some of the earliest births are
referenced to towns where the family lived before coming to
Leominster. On some pages, the ink is badly faded. A separate
index (#1) that includes vital records of this time period
does not reference names to pages in this volume; rather, it
refers to names and pages in the transcript below.
