Originally the North Precinct of Norton, Mansfield was incorporated into a district on 26 April 1770. It became a town five years later, on 23 August 1775, and developed into a manufacturing center, including a cotton mill by 1814. Today, adjoining Bristol County towns include Easton, Norton, Attleboro, and North Attleboro. Mansfield is bounded, also, by two towns in Norfolk County, Foxborough and Sharon.

There are 16 volumes in this collection. They include three vital records books from 1703 to 1844 and five volumes of town records from 1731 to 1882. Additionally, there are three books of marriages and intentions from 1839-1886. From 1844 to 1895, there are four volumes of births, marriages and death, as well as a separate index.

Vital records before and after the dates listed in the title are included in this volume, as well as precinct records from 1731 to 1771. Births are arranged by family, include associated deaths, and most are found on pages 108-158. Some, however, are interspersed with other records; e.g., page 88.

There are curious features about this volume. First, it appears that the data on pages 1-16 at the end of the book should precede page 17 at the beginning of the book. Instead, a similar number of pages of marriage intentions are placed at the front of the book. They seem to belong at the end with other marriage intentions. Second, there are two indexes; both arranged in irregular order. Some references are found in both indexes, others are not. Additionally, note that some pages in the volume, especially the indexes, are badly faded and that occasional data was lost in the filming because of tight binding. Also, dates earlier and later than those listed below may be found.
