Marblehead, located next to the Atlantic Ocean in Essex County, and bordered on the east by Salem and Swampscott, was designated a plantation in 1635. In 1649, Marblehead separated from Salem and became a town. The Marblehead records contain many lists of residents; e.g., potential jurors, committee members, town officers, and militia.

Marblehead Town Records 1648-1710. Vol A. 262 pages. Transcript.

This book transcribes from volumes 1 and 2 (below) meeting minutes of various groups; e.g. town voters, commoners, proprietors, and selectman. It also copies, from the same volumes, town accounts, land grants, and various lists of residents. As neither Vol 1 nor Vol 2 contain marriages, however, the source of those in this book is uncertain.

Look through this book of town meeting minutes, selectmen’s records, and town accounts for lists of town officers, names of those supported by the town, and other items of interest; e.g., controls on the price of wheat (pp 512-515); the relation between smallpox and dogs (p 375); a notice (p 92) that Negroes were prohibited from the town, and a later report (p 516) of a Negro man "taken up". Where slashed page numbers appear, the first references the original number at the top of the page.

Marblehead Town Records 1764-1788. Vol #3. 551 pages, plus [topical] index.

Routine lists include jurors and others with town responsibilities; as well as persons reporting stray animals. Other interesting items include the December 1774 denunciation of Gov. Hutchinson, a Loyalist, and his associates (p 195/202ff); 1777 efforts to cleanse the town of small pox (p 270/277); and a 1780 table (p 364/372) identifying town residents by category; e.g., widows, missing, and those in captivity. With slashed page numbers, the first is the original number--the one referenced in the index.

Three different numbering systems are used in this book, with the original numbers extending from 1-155, but often hidden by tight binding and/or crossed out at the top left of alternate pages. It is these numbers that are referenced by the fragmentary index at the beginning of the book. Modern page numbers are found in the upper right corner of alternate pages, and run from 1-301 (with 300-301 found before 39/272 in this collection). Another set of numbers, placed near the original numbers–but easier to find and read, run from 181-335. Space permits only the original and modern page numbers on the titles below, with the original listed first. Note that page 142/278 is blank.
