Methuen became a town in 1725 from Haverhill. This collection includes 26 volumes of town records.

Methuen Town Records 1725-1804. Book 1/[Book A]. 352 pages.

Referenced now as Book 1, this old book at one time was known as Book A. Though some pages are worn and the binding is tight, most data is legible. Vital records include births, deaths, marriages, and marriage intentions of about 1713/14-1826, with most before 1770. Town meeting minutes of 1725-1768 include some lists of residents. Look on page 258 for reference to a "Great and Unusual Dark Day that Appeared on Friday, May the 19^th in the Year 1780." Regarding the double page numbers below, those behind the slash are the original numbers; they are referenced in some of the vital record extracts taken from Book A (see fiches 34-44). For a transcript of the town meetings, see fiches 8-11. Curiously, the index on the first pages does not apply to this book; rather it references soldiers and sailors of the Civil War to a book of 67 pages.
