The road to Monroe from the Mohawk
Trail passes through beautiful, but steep, mountainous terrain. In
the winter, the present Town Clerk must drive several miles, and
in and out of Readsboro, Vermont, to get from her home to the
vault where the old records are stored. At other times of the
year, the trip seems to require only a short drive up or down the
mountain. Neighboring Massachusetts communities are Rowe to the
east and Florida to the south and west. It was from Rowe and
"the Gore" that Monroe was founded on February 21, 1822.

The first 59 pages of this book
contain births and deaths, by family, and include some events
occurring in other towns. Most of the remainder of the book is
devoted to mortgages and accounts of real and personal estates,
with skimpy marriage and intentions data interspersed. Writing
that appears upside-down on pages 53-59 of fiche #2 is found
right-side up on pages 257-272 of fiche #5. The spine of this book
is marked with the beginning date of 1822.
