In 1635, "Wessacucon" became known as the plantation of Neweberry. Over time, parts of Newbury were taken to form Newburyport (1764 and 1851) and West Newbury (1819). Other adjoining towns include Rowley to the south, and Georgetown and Groveland to the west.

Newbury [First Book of] Town Records 1637-1687. 321 pages.
"Copied from the Old Book written by Woodbridge, Rawson & Somerby. What is left commences 10. 5 month [10 July] 1637." Typical entries include: (1) page 11; Thomas Cromwell, Samuel Sudland, Richard Kent, John Pike, Robert Pike and Nicholas Holt fined for being absent from 8 a.m. town meeting [of 24 Feb 1637]; (2) page 19; thunder and earthquake 1 June 1638 while sun was shining; (3) page 274; Hannah Adams, Deborah Coffin, Mary Coffin, Sara Browne, Hannah Plumer, Hannah Jaques, and Sarah Little rewarded 1676 for money gifts; and (4) page 321; John Poore voted 14 May 1653 against a tax increase to pay for a free school. Other pages show land records, tax lists, jury lists; and page 268 provides a list of 1675 soldiers fighting at Marlboro and Hadley.

This book is divided into four sections. The first three are listings of church members from 1707-1772, showing their financial contributions and usually providing admission dates. Though mostly alphabetical, look for out-of-order entries at the beginning and end of each group. Most of the last section of the book shows church payments.

Newbury Proprietors Records from 1686-[1729/30]. Vol. 3. 103 pages.

Pages 1-88 contain an original account of land divisions 1-10, Browns Garden 1-2, and lots sold by the Proprietors Committee--with dates of about 1686-1729/30. The remainder of the book, pages 89-103, are a transcript of the original "pasture book," with earliest date of 29 May 1714. Both original records and transcript seem to contain different data from the volume below.

Newbury Proprietors Records 1686-1692 (sic). About 300 pages.

This book, with dates ranging from 1655-1740, details multiple land divisions, including those for wood lots, garden lots, river lots, pasture lots, and "old towne" lots. It describes each property, and identifies the owner, but seldom provides the date of the grant. This makes it nearly impossible to determine dates of the various divisions. Accordingly, dates on fiche titles may not be correct. For alphabetical lists of proprietors of, perhaps, 1704, see pages 88-124. Note, also, land grants of 1732/3 on fiche 138.

This book contains records as early as 1724/5. Regarding the date provided for proprietors of the third pasture, Richard Dole is linked to 1730 land in the book below, and many persons listed (or others with the same name) seem to be in Newbury about that time; two notable exceptions are Widow Bathsheba Knight who died 1705, and Mr. [John] Spencer who returned to England about 1640.
