Newburyport, Essex County, surrounded by Amesbury and Salisbury on the north, West Newbury on the west, and Newbury on the south, became a town in 1764. Dates as early as 1635 in this collection come from the time when Newburyport was part of Newbury.

Newburyport Records 1764-1789. Vol 1. 546 pages.

These records occasionally include an illustrated plan of lots or streets; e.g., see leaf before page 1 for a 1766 plan of river lots, and page 221 for a 1774 plan of "a way leading from Fish Street to King Street". See on page 22 the 1764 quarantine placed on Mr. Ralph Crop Nebel due to his recent residence in Boston "where the smallpox is prevalent".

Note that town meetings of this time were not open to females nor to all males–just for freeholders and other eligible voters. One item of special interest in the meeting minutes was that the town had an epidemic in summer 1796 of "malignant fever disorder". Afterward (3 April 1797), residents gave thanks to Dr. Vergnies for his assistance and advice during that crisis (see page 10). Another misfortune was a "tremendous and desolating fire" in the town [31 May 1811]; see last pages of the book for more detail.
