Since early town records presumably burned, this compilation of New Salem vital records combines church and town records. The town records include one volume of data from 1857-1894, with a sprinkling of births and marriages beginning as early as 1748. Three index volumes accompany the 1857-1894 book. Fortunately, the church records for the early period, provide birth and marriage information missing from the town records. The church records also identify early residents and some of their activities.

Be aware, however, of late registrations posted out of sequence; e.g., Noyes births of 1841 and 1843 registered with births of 1863 on page 6. Such late registrations provide birth dates are early as 1769 (births, page 11) and one death dates as early as 1810 (deaths, page 11)--mostly for the Hastings and Andrews families. Much of the ink in this book is light.
