Northbridge, first established as a district in 1772, became a town in 1775. On today's maps, the town almost looks like the Pilgrim's Hat logo on signs for the Massachusetts Turnpike. Besides Uxbridge, its mother town, Northbridge neighbors include Upton, Mendon, Sutton, and Grafton. This collection contains twenty volumes of records.

Charles O. Bachelor, an excellent penman who used high quality ink, transcribed and indexed three books (No. 2 Misc, No. 1 B & D, No. 2 B & D) to create this volume. Entries are referenced to their original source. Listed vital records are births 1748-1848, deaths 1771-1849, and marriages and publishments 1772-1841 --though events prior to 1772, strictly speaking, occurred before Northbridge was formed. Miscellaneous town records include the usual ear marks, fence disputes, militia lists, mortgages, pew deeds perambulations, strays, warnings out, and so forth. A special feature, however, is a town census of 1837 (pages 265-268).

Note especially the tables of births and deaths, the town census on pages 226-227, the 1796 will of Elizabeth Adams on page 67, and the 1840 militia list on pages 250-251. For the most part, data is entered chronologically--with publishments, marriages, and town records extending from about 1772-1841. Most births and deaths are found on the first 80 pages and occur between 1748-1800 (exceptions: page 115).
