Prior to becoming a town in 1710, Norton was the North Precinct of Taunton. It is reported that the first home in the area was built in 1670 by William Witherell, with manufacturing and major settlement beginning about 1696. Today, Taunton still borders Norton on the south. Other surrounding towns are Easton, Mansfield, Attleboro and Rehoboth.

The first six volumes of Norton vital records include data from 1688 (or earlier) to 1855. Town records from 1715-1861 comprise another three volumes. Marriage intentions from 1711-1882 are found in an additional three volumes, with scanty or missing data for many of the years before 1773. This collection also includes four volumes of vital records and indexes from 1843-1900, as well as a volume listing the town's enrolled militia from 1857-1902. Data in the early books of Taunton, Easton and Mansfield may supplement the earliest Norton records.

Norton Copy of Records Vol. 1: Births, Marriages, Deaths 1696-1700's. Vol 1. 161 pages, typed about 1891. Dates are found earlier and later than the title indicates, although most after 1799 are deaths. Further, dates listed below are representative and may not be all-inclusive. Births and deaths are generally recorded by family. Occasionally the day of birth (e.g., Tuesday) and/or the time of birth (e.g., 2 in the afternoon) are recorded. Negro records are found on pages 159 and 160. Verify data in this book with the original volume.
