Norwell was the name given in 1888 to South Scituate. Until 1849, the area was a part of the town of Scituate. As the name of the area changed, so did the title of the records. Presently Norwell is surrounded by Scituate, Marshfield, Pembroke, Hanover, Rockland, Hingham and Cohasset. There are 15 volumes in this collection.

Ancient Records of Births, Marriages & Deaths in Scituate 1636-1799. Vol IV. Transcribed 1857, 322 pages + index. The fine writing of this transcription "from the 4th volume of the Ancient Records" is very hard to read on pages that are faded. Old pages are referenced as o.p., but the indexes appear to be keyed to (new) page numbers of the transcript. Note that some death records are found scattered among the birth records. Perhaps most events recorded in this volume occurred after 1780, but births as early as 1736 and deaths as early as 1753 are listed. Dates given below and on fiche headers are representative and may not be all-inclusive. Births are generally arranged by family and extend from about 1736-1845. Most of the births are recorded on pages 101-341; some, however, are found scattered among the town records; e.g., pages 352, 370 and 455. Marriage intentions from 1795-1822 are on pages 1-9 and 39-66 while marriages from about 1787-1833 are on pages 15-39 and 84-100. Deaths from about 1753-1831 are found on pages 9-14, 66-69 and 70-83.
