Pelham, Massachusetts,
became a town 15 January 1743. Earlier records, however,
are available, and this collection consists of eleven
data volumes beginning in 1738. There are no index
volumes, as such. It appears that until 1816 the
marriages and intentions were kept with the town
minutes. In contrast, the births and deaths existed
separately from other town records.

Besides the early vital
records and town minutes, an account of great historical
value is a volume identifying the early proprietors.
Another significant book, and not often found in town
records, is a volume of alphabetically arranged births
and deaths from 1820 to 1844.

In 1843, the town began
keeping the births, marriages, and deaths in separate
sections of one book, in a format standardized by the
state. In 1860 individual books were begun for the
births, marriages, and deaths.
