This town in Plymouth County, incorporated in 1711, was originally a part of Duxbury. The first saw mill in Plymouth Colony was established here. It had no competition for forty years. Later (ca. 1814), cotton and woolen mills were established. A map of the town in 1831 is shown on fiche 30.

The books filmed for this collection include a variety of documents. Besides vital records, there are town meeting minutes and other town manuscripts, land transactions, and records of Congregationalists and Quakers. Also found are Rebellion (Civil War) records, accounts of personal property sales, and pauper registers.

Pembroke Births, Marriages, Deaths 1712-1720.

Births as early as 1692 and as late as 1751 are recorded in this book. Most marriages are within the 1712-1720 time period. Few deaths are recorded. Although the ink is badly faded, most is readable. The index at the end of the book (circa 12 pages) lists both male and female names.

Pembroke Records 1711-1728.

In this volume, vital records are interspersed among town records. Marriages are concentrated on pages 29, 43 and 49; births (and a few deaths) are concentrated on pages 33, 37-38 and 49. The ink is badly faded, especially page 19, but most is readable with effort. Pages 53 and 54 are torn; any missing data from them may be found on pages 92-93 of the transcript below.

Pembroke Records of the Major's Purchase 1662-1785. 180 pages.

These are land records. Some of the ink is readable; other is almost entirely faded. Some of the writing is legible; other resembles hieroglyphics. Some of the records reference female names; most refer to males. Page numbers in parentheses are original page numbers.

These are town meeting minutes from 1735-1781. They sometimes may be referenced as volume III. A transcript of the Declaration of Independence appears on pages 227-229, along with a statement that copies were distributed to all ministers in the state--for mandatory reading to every congregation.

Pembroke Records 1735-1791. Part 2:267-469.

This is a book of town and vital records circa 1715-1791. It may be referenced as volume IV. Marriages (about 1724-1791) are concentrated on pages 326-333, 340-345, 372-373 and 377-397. Births (about 1722-1790) are mainly on pages 334-340, 346-369 and 398-457. Most deaths (about 1715-1791) are on pages 370-371 and 374-376. Curiously, some indexing is done by given name, rather than by surname. Because the ink is so badly faded, many pages are hard to read.

Burial place is given for many of the dead. Some of the marriage partners were from other states and some of the marriages occurred in homes or meeting houses outside of Pembroke.
