Plympton became a town in 1707 from part of Plymouth. Presently, the town is surrounded by Kingston, Carver, Middleborough, Halifax, and Pembroke. Of the 26 volumes in this collection, 18 books cover the period before 1841. From 1841-1900, four registers and four index books complete the set.

Plympton Parish and Town Records 1701-1734. Book I.

Much of this volume is the original "First book of the western precinct of Plymouth." Besides vital data and typical town business, these records tell of wild cats; e.g., page 91. For the table of contents, see pages 104-105. Vital records include births and deaths 1679-1732, generally listed by family and scattered on pages from 101-158. Additional deaths (1711-1762) are found on pages 111-114 and 130-132. Marriages from 1708-1731 are sprinkled on pages between 86 and 160. Eligible voters of 1708 are listed on page 111. Indexes (very likely incomplete) and their location include: births in the preface, ear marks on page 87, "warnings out" and families on page 106, marriages on pages 107-109, and deaths on page 110.

The volume is annotated liberally by Lewis Bradford, who served as Town Clerk from 1812 until his death in 1851. Among the notes of Mr. Bradford are an early town history (at the beginning of the volume) and transcripts of some of the early pages; e.g., pages 1, 2 and 6 on pages 95-99. Also, he provides histories and obituaries (with births as early as 1648) for various families and individuals; e.g., pages 88 and 113.

Plympton Town Records 1732-1815. Book II.

Vital records in this volume range from about 1649-1854, with births and deaths usually arranged by family. One of the town clerks, Lewis Bradford, often adds supplementary data, that he documents to other sources; e.g., probate records, old colony records, and church records.

Plympton Parish Records 1827-1863. Book III.

Especially interesting are pages (1-350) written by Lewis Bradford, who served simultaneously as parish clerk and town clerk. His "brief historical sketches" personalize names. Especially poignant are Bradford's comments on the cause and effect of the law passed in 1834 allowing persons to withdraw their memberships from the parishes; e.g., pages 83, 207, 219, 349.
