Richmond, Massachusetts, borders New York on the west and is surrounded by West Stockbridge on the south, Lenox to the east, and Pittsfield and Hancock on the north. The town was incorporated as Richmont on 21 June 1765 from the plantations of Yokun Town and Mount Ephraim. Later, 3 March 1785, the name was changed to Richmond.

An initial search for town and vital records uncovered none before 1844. However, intensive searching in a basement vault yielded an unknown and unused volume containing vital records from 1812 to 1848!

On closer examination upstairs in the clerk's office, the first page of this newly found book noted that "deaths [were] brought from Book A, page 98." When asked about Book A, the clerk thought a minute, walked over to an old safe in her office and proceeded to open it. Inside the safe were old town record books. The oldest book was a town meeting volume covering the years 1791 to 1823.
 

That old town meeting book was searched, fruitlessly, two or three times for interspersed vital records. Every other book in the old safe was examined at least twice, but Book A, the vital records from 1765 to 1812, was not there. Perhaps it will come to light at another time.
