In 1639, Mr. Ezechi Rogers'
Plantation was renamed Rowley. The town is surrounded by
Ipswich on the south, Newbury and Georgetown on the north and
Boxford on the west. Property exchanges and boundary changes
occurred among all five towns from 1640 until 1931.

This collection includes 19
volumes of data. From 1639 to 1844, there are four volumes of
vital records (fiches 1-22). Two of these four volumes are
originals and two are transcripts of the originals with added
information from other sources, as evidenced by the listing of
baptisms. Other baptisms, together with births, marriages and
deaths of the early period, are found in a volume of church
records (fiches 24-30). The identity of early town proprietors
are contained in four volumes of their records (fiches 31-51).
Rounding out the early period are five town record books from
1643-1807 (fiches 52-73). For the years after 1843, there is
one volume of marriage intentions (fiche 23), one volume of
rebellion records (fiche 74) and two volumes of birth,
marriage and death registers with an associated index (fiches
75-89).
