Russell became a town on
February 25, 1792. It was created from part of Montgomery and
part of Westfield known as the "New Addition". The
town is bordered by Blandford to the west and Granville to the
south.

The Russell records comprise 12
volumes of data. Additionally, baptisms from 1800-1833 of the
Russell Congregational Church and a membership list of the
Baptist Church for 1845 are included. The earliest book has
data as early as 1776 that extends scantily to 1814. For the
next 30 years, no vital records were found except for the few
church documents. Beginning in 1843/1844, a register of
births, marriages and deaths continues until 1859. A
contemporary volume appears to be a transcript of this record.
From 1860 to 1891, there are six volumes of vital records and
indexes. Parts of three volumes of data after 1891 complete
this collection.
