First reference to the town of Scituate occurs 1 July 1633. The town is bounded on the north by Cohasset, on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, on the south by Marshfield and on the west by Norwell. It was one of the towns attacked by Indians during Philips War in 1676.

There are thirty volumes of vital records from 1633-1900. Town, land and vital records prior to 1850 include 22 volumes (fiches 1-77). There are four volumes of miscellaneous records; namely, militia, registers of voters and marriage intentions (fiches 78-90). Birth, marriages and deaths from 1843-1900 are in 2 volumes (fiches 105-114), with three volumes of associated indexes (fiches 91-104). See also the Norwell 1633-1900 vital records.

Scituate Town Records 1649-1707. Vol II (C1).
Identified on page one as the "booke for the recordinge of the Land," and noted elsewhere as "The First Book of Records 1639-1703/4," this volume frequently references Cohasset and Conihasset lands. Entries as early as 1633 and as late as 1735 may be found, but most seem to fall between 1680 and 1710. The book has a dual numbering system. Pages 1-121 are counted singly. Starting with page 32, however, a concurrent system (one number for every two pages) begins with another page 1. Pages 32-119, therefore, are also numbered as 1-44. With page 121/45, the identification of single pages stops and subsequent numbers represent a double page. Page references in the index seem to refer to either numbering system. It may be necessary, therefore, to scan two or three different pages (all with the same number!) to find a name appearing in the index.
