Formerly a part of
Rehoboth, Seekonk was incorporated in 1812. Bordering
towns in Bristol County presently include Attleboro,
Rehoboth and Swansea. Rhode Island neighbors are
Pawtucket, East Providence and Barrington.

The 12 volumes in this
collection include data from 1760 to 1900. Five volumes
contain vital records and four include records of town
government and taxes. Early births and deaths are
indexed in Book No. 1. Later vital records, beginning
1850, are indexed in three separate volumes.

Dates listed on the title
seem to vary somewhat from actual dates in this volume.
In fact, the first pages include family data of
1768-1859. The formal registration of births, deaths and
marriages began in 1844 with the recording of events
that occurred in 1843. For some reason, births of
1843-1849 appear on pages following the births of
1848-1883. The last registrations for marriages and
deaths were, respectively, 1853 and 1865. Note that
deaths of 1864 (pp 8-9) and 1865 (p 3) are found with
earlier deaths. It is unclear for some listings whether
or not the year of marriage or death is the same as the
year of registration. Faded ink is hard to read on a few
pages.
