First established as a
parish of Lancaster 1743, Sterling was incorporated as a
town in 1781. Settlement began, however, as early as
1720; most of the land being purchased from the Nashaway
Indians in 1701. The first settler was Gamaliel Beaman.
There are eleven volumes of vital records from the
town's beginning to 1900.

Sterling Births,
Marriages, Deaths, Intentions and Miscellaneous
1766-1860. Vol 1. "Most of
these records are from 1794 after the fire, but there
are a few before that date." Those before 1794 include
births as early as 1759, and marriages and deaths of
1782 or earlier. Marriage intentions as late as 1873 are
recorded, but birth, death and marriage records conclude
between 1836 and 1840. See Volume 4 below for a
biographical reference to the 1786 birth of Lucy
Whitney.

volume appears to be for the years 1830-1850 and is
arranged alphabetically. Records as early as 1740 and as
late as 1907, however, are found. Births are recorded by
family, and include some related deaths. Marriages are
arranged by the groom's surname.

The last part of this
volume is an index to the birth, marriage and death
registers of 1843 to 1891 or 1892 (volumes 3 & 4). The
first part, however, is an index of marriage intentions.
Some of the indexed intentions are from Volume 1, the
"old" book, which records intentions from 1794-1873.
Three additional books containing marriage intentions
were also indexed, but their dates and present location
are unknown. In the index, the now-missing books were
described as "small" (about 54 pages), "2nd small"
(about 75 pages) and "B" (about 72 pages).
