In 1727, Uxbridge, earlier part of Mendon, became a town. Surrounding towns include Douglas, Sutton, Northbridge, Mendon, and Millville. The 37 volumes in this collection include town meeting minutes; church, military and vital records; account books and mortgages for personal property; a register of voters with ages given; and a unique, probably one of a kind, record of stray animals.

An examination of the records shows conflicts sometimes surfacing between selectmen and the town treasurer. See, for instance, the poem below and the Judge's answer on fiches #80-83.

To their own care to have this book assigned

But whoever shall this book obtain

Will find the profit pages not half the pain

Births of about 1703-1846 and death (plus tombstone) data of 1716-1844 are recorded in this transcript, along with associated indexes. Most of the births and deaths are copied from the original volumes below. Most of the vital records seem to pre-date 1800; in fact, deaths beyond 1832 in the transcript may not be listed in the original volume. Various records from other sources appear at the end of the transcript. They include partial indexing for births of 1929-1959; treasurer's receipts for 1825; partial indexing of "W" marriages from 1844-1855 and 1855-1892; and four Catholic baptism certificates from 1888 and 1918. Blank pages include 102-103, 108, 119, 124, 134, 143, 158, 220, 250-254, and 355-359.

Uxbridge Miscellaneous Colonial Records & Revolutionary Soldiers Receipts. This is a book of town records from about 1739-1798, including military service, town meetings, road descriptions and tax records. Pages 1-129 are receipts for service in the Continental Army for varying periods of time. Receipts for 1780 include those for 14 days of service in response to the "alarm" at Tiverton (Rhode Island), a three-month campaign to West Point (New York), and an unspecified six-month campaign. Other items of special interest are references to the "minute men" of 1794 (page 209), a treatise on the "state" of Massachusetts Bay in 1777 (pp 215-216), and tax evaluations on pages 157-158, 163-165.

This book seems to be a contemporary duplicate through 1797 of the book below. Perhaps one copy was official; e.g., "The Town of Uxbridge is the true owner of this Book," and perhaps the treasurer considered the other book his personal copy. What is the significance of the poem on the third frame of fiche #80? Did the selectmen dispute the treasurer's possession of the other book? Was Frederic Taft the poet? He was one of several treasurers who often had problems with town selectmen--who, incidentally, often shared the Taft surname.

On the last frame for this book is a scratch paper with lists of births and deaths that occurred and/or were recorded in 1838-39. Exact dates for the 28 deaths suggest actual death dates. As the 25 births for 1838 were attributed to just 16 families, however, it is probably a list of births recorded--and not necessarily occurring--during the year. Otherwise, quintuplets may have been born to Benjamin Buffum and his wife in 1838.
