Weymouth, settled in 1622, was known as the plantation of Wessaguscus, Wessagusset or Wichaguscusset. It was the first grant of land within the Massachusetts Colony. In 1635, the name changed to Waymouthe. Bounded by Boston Harbor to the north, neighboring towns include Hingham on the east, Abington and Rockland on the south, and Holbrook and Braintree on the west.

The Weymouth vital records are some of the most orderly kept in the Commonwealth. This allows easy identification of the contents of the volumes. As in most other towns, however, many of the volumes contain records besides those indicated on the cover and/or spine. Some of the earliest records are too worn and faded for easy reading; 1860 data is also very faded. This collection of 35 volumes includes: early births, marriages and deaths 1633-1845 (6 volumes, fiches 1-25); marriage intentions 1790-1889 (6 volumes, fiches 26-58); proprietor and town records 1642-1836 (5 volumes, fiches 59-82); military records 1840-1931 (5 volumes, fiches 83-97); and vital records with associated indexes 1843-1900 (11 volumes, fiches 98-142).
