This collection of early vital and town records
of Brookline, New Hampshire, includes manuscripts found both in
the Town Hall and at the State Archives. Birth records extend
from 1748-1901, marriages from 1778-1928, and deaths from
1748-1928. Located in Hillsborough County, the town was known
from 1764-1798 as Raby. Brookline borders Townsend,
Massachusetts. Other neighbors include the New Hampshire towns
of Milford, Hollis, and Mason.
Brookline Record of Marriages, Births, and
Deaths [1748-1923]. Vol 3. About 340 pages. New
Hampshire State Archives. Dates of family births and deaths
extend from about 1748-1921, with most before 1860, and no
births after 1896. Marriages date from 1778-1923, with those
after 1853 mingled with marriage intentions of 1854-1923. Most
births, and some marriages, are transcribed from and referenced
to pages of the "old Book" below (fiches 7-15). Most ink is
legible.

documents are: (1) a map showing the location of some early home
sites, (2) the 1784 request of the town of Raby to combine with
part of the town of Hollis, and (3) the 1798 vote to change the
name of Raby to Brookline.

New Hampshire State Archives. These records include town meeting
minutes, tax assessments, liquor and tavern licenses, and fence
divisions. Beware of the handwriting of Nathaniel Shattuck who
became Town Clerk about 1840; his numbers "4" sometimes look
like "5" and his unusual "8" looks somewhat like a "4".

Brookline Orderly Book of the Militia [1827-1837].
Brookline Town Hall. These records of the 11th Company of the
5th Regiment New Hampshire Militia provide the names of
commissioned and non-commissioned officers, musicians, and
privates; as well as those enlisting, discharged or exempted
from military duty. Oaths of allegiance; and inventories of
weapons, equipment, and supplies sometimes appear. Unexpected
entries include the 1846 marriage intentions of two couples:
Daniel Goodwin and Martha Boynton, and James Edson and Emily
Gould.
