These newly discovered,
hand-written Transcripts stored at the Massachusetts State Archives
are in excellent condition, a benefit, no doubt, of being unknown
and unused for so many years. In fact, the binder's original wrapper
still covers the book for Ashfield!
The most important merit of the Transcripts, however, is their
existence--especially in the many towns where fires followed the
transcribing. For instance, towns such as Buckland, Duxbury, and
Windsor have no vital record manuscripts before 1850 except for the
Transcripts. In other towns, isolated volumes copied into the
Transcripts have since disappeared.
Beginning with entries for the
earliest colonists and continuing to records of residents in 1850,
most of the Transcripts present vital data in its original
form--whether by family, by date, by alphabet, or in the same
two-page format found in the registers of 1843-1850.
Nearly 10" wide and 12" tall, the
Transcript volumes vary in thickness from 1/2 inch to 10 inches.
Good paper quality and legible handwriting provide the sharp
contrast needed for an excellent film product. |
